If I couldn’t have a career as a major league player, I think I like to have Marty Appel‘s resume (perhaps after Roger Angell).
Appel began as the kid who answered Mickey Mantle’s fan mail (and wouldn’t you like to get a peek at some of those?). He eventually became the Yankees’ PR director under George Steinbrenner, certainly a glass half-full/half-empty deal. He was also the executive producer for Yankees’ games on WPIX, fopr which he won an Emmy.
In addition, he headed his own PR firm, worked for the New York Apples of the World Team Tennis league, and served as a consultant on numerous other projects, including the 1996 Summer Olympics and the short-lived Israel Baseball League. All the while he managed to find time to write or collaborate on some 25 sports books. I know I must be leaving some stuff out, so forgive me.

His latest — Pinstripes by the Tale: Half a Century In and Around Yankees Baseball — is a long overdue reflection on his impressive journey. I’m sure he has enough material for a second volume.
